12 to the barFeaturing some of Newark’s best jazz players, 12-To-The-Bar is a small band with a big band sound, playing wellknown classics by Basie, Ellington plus Miller, Darin and Sinatra standards – and Gershwin and Bernstein tunes with a modern twist. Great fun!

 

Neil C Young Trio

     18 - Neil C Young Trio

Neil C YoungAn extremely gifted, original and witty guitarist who is establishing his unique talent as a performer and composer here and in the States.

His many influences include bossa nova, bebop and blues and he delights in playful, fresh and beautiful harmonic compositions and arrangements. His Trio features Richard Young on drums and bassist Alan Whitham. Sparkling stuff.

 

Derek Winters

     12 - Derek Winters

Derek WintersDerek – who lived in Collingham for a time – is a fine trumpet player and popular on the European scene. His handpicked band includes drummer Paul Russell, Chris Saunders on piano, Steve Peters on bass and reedsman John Crocker.

Derek has played with Alton Purnell, Louis Nelson, Kid Thomas, Sammy Rimington, Thomas Jefferson and Ken Colyer, the Dave Donohoe and Chris Blount bands and ran The Algiers Stompers with Brian Carrick. Now a freelance trumpet player.

 

Dave Wilkinson Trio

     11, 18 - Dave Wilkinson

Guitarist, vocalist and songwriter Dave’s Trio will play standards, something bluesier and some originals at Stray’s. Born in Nottingham, Dave now lives and performs in Barcelona. His jazz style draws on American roots music like blues and country but an eclectic range of influences adds something extra to the mix.

His debut solo album is out this year. Also guesting in an exciting collaboration with Wendy Kirkland’s Trio.

 

Bob Wilson's Jazz Band

     13 - Bob Wilson’s Jazz Band

Bob WilsonBob’s entertaining band will have you stamping, clapping and singing along. Newark Town Club opens its doors for a relaxing afternoon in secluded gardens over a picnic, a drink and a swinging concert in the marquee. With a repertoire of great tunes by Ellington, Basie, and the three Louis’ – Prima, Jordan and Armstrong! – expect mainstream swing, a little jump-jive, a
smattering of trad, blues and velvet vocals from this polished combo.

Trombonist Bob is a veteran of many cruises, a regular with the Kenny Barker, Syd Lawrence and John Miller Orchestras and his band includes regular sidemen for the Pete Allen and Chris Barber Bands. Easy, good-time, Sunday afternoon Festival jazz!
